Monday & Tuesday November 2nd & 3rd, 2020

Welcome to the Library,  Ms. Jackman and Ms. Lane’s Grade 10 Science classes!  You’re here to do research for your Climate Change Speech Assignment.

We recommend the Virtual Library for databases as well as the Library Catalogue for a variety of media pieces.

Global Issues in Context,  Science Reference Centre and Canadian Points of View are all great places to find a variety of news articles as well as journal articles.

Remember to select your grade, 9-12, when searching for these databases. The login  for Gale in Context-Global Issues is trillium. The login/password for the other databases is tdsb/trillium20!

You will need to keep track of your resources as you research so that you are able to format them properly in APA. Check the examples below.

Watch the following videos for help in referencing your visuals in APA format. The following 2 videos give good overviews of 1) sourcing images that are free to be reproduced and 2) what to do if you do not have all the information you need.

You should make sure that you are able to reference whatever image you are using and that may take some careful searching within websites for the creator of the image.

Grade 9 Science

Ms. Lane’s SNC1D1/7 classes will be coming to the Virtual Library to work on their Invasive Species/Endangered Species assignment.

Resources for the SNC1D1/7

Before you can access the database list, click on the yellow FIND tile and remember to indicate that you’re in Gr 9-12. These databases are password protected when you are accessing them from home. You will need to be logged into AW first and use the user id/password, trillium/trillium to access most of the databases. Infobase e-books (see below) id/password is elem/elem.

The Library Catalogue will also will allow you remote access to our Electronic and Streaming Media/Video Collection.

As always, remember to keep track of where you found your information by the website or database name and the title of the article/information so that you can properly cite/format it for the assignment using APA.

Citation

For Science assignments, you probably remember that you will be using the APA school of citation. Follow Ms. Lane’s instructions regarding citing your sources. She does not require a Reference List at the end of your work. Your teacher is the BOSS of how you give credit to your resources. Make sure you follow her instructions, using the Online Research Notes form.

You will likely want to use pictures or images in the presentation of your species and we would recommend using websites that do not require a citation, if possible. Here are two good sites for free stock photos:

Periods Two and Four- CGC1D7/1

Ms. Pak and Ms. Milenkovski’s Grade 9 Geography classes are coming in to work on their landform regions research.

This is the second time in the library so a quick reminder of how to create a Reference page is a must before beginning your research.

  1. The Canadian Government’s Natural Resources Department has an excellent Canadian Atlas, providing information on Canadian geography by region. It would be an excellent source.
  2. Canadian Geographic has an excellent Online Atlas that also has information about Canada’s landforms.
  3. WorldAtlas provides basic landform information.
  4. Our Virtual Library has great databases for your research purposes.
  5. The Library’s Catalogue provides you access to our print, digital and streaming collection.

Period 1 – PPL30F

Ms. Savage’s Grade11 Health Class will be working on research for their Wellness Conference assignment.

The Library Catalogue is a great place to start your research. You’ll find books and media resources on a variety of topics.

The Virtual Library has several websites that have the information that you are looking for. Remember to use the SEARCH feature, click on Grades 9-12, and your subject which is Health and PE.

Advanced Placement Source has many articles about your topics. Remember to limit your search by choosing the Full Text option and limiting the date range to the past ten years or so.

Global Issues in Context is another great database with many types of resources: articles from newspapers, magazines, journals, books, videos, interviews, etc. It is the Amazon of databases.

Teen Health and Wellness and Teens Health are both good sources of information focused on teens and presented in very user-friendly format.

The Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) has a lot of information on mental health issues.

Curated Resources for Classes in the Library Today

Welcome to the Library!

Period 3 – FSF3U7

Mr. Matchett’s Grade 11 IB French class is coming in to work on their research on La culture francophone.

There’s a whole big world of French resources online, following these slides to take to you where you need to go.

French Resources

Don’t forget that Google will be a possible source, after you have changed the language from English to French, before searching your topic.

Advice….. for what it’s worth.

  • Pick something that you haven’t researched before. If you go down the same path, you won’t be terribly inspired.
  • Into sports? Instead of looking at Maurice Richard or the Montreal Olympics you could look at Youppi or why Quebec football teams are so dominant at the Highschool and University level?
  • Think creatively of what French resources you could research. TFO, TVA, CBC Television, Télé-Québec, RDS are all major sources of Quebec and Francophone culture…

Period 4 – HHS4U

Ms. Cross’s Families in Canada class will be coming in to work on their Culminating ISU Research.

Period 3– GPP3O1-11/12

The PEER Leadership class will be in the Library working on their Literature Review.

Today you will be working on selecting your research topics and looking at different sources for your research. Some of those sources should include….

 

The Virtual Library’s Educator Resources  are used by Teachers when they need to do related research in the field of education. Seems like a solid place to go….. Use the different databases found here and be sure to keep a record of each source as it’ll make citation far easier.

 

The Advanced Placement Source also provides elite-level access to a high-achieving academic database. With access to thousands of peer-reviewed journals and other academically viable sources of research, the AP Source should be used heavily in your research. Passwords for the AP Source can be found in your Student Agenda or on the Learnmarks provided to Homeforms in September.
