Period 3-ENG3U

Welcome Mr. MacDonald’s Grade 11 English class! Today we’ll review where to find quality sources for research, and how to embed and cite sources in order to create an outstanding persuasive essay.

For research purposes, we’ll base our start in the Virtual Library. (Remember that many databases are password-protected from home).

  1. The Library Catalogue allows you remote access to our print, digital and streaming resources from anywhere at any time. To access this resource, you’ll simply need your TDSB log-in information.
  2. The Canadian Encyclopedia is an excellent source of information for Canadian individuals (or for those with ties to Canada).
  3. Websites within the Virtual Library such as Canadian Points of View and Gale in Context: Global Issues may be helpful. Just remember to choose Grade 9-12 and All Subjects in the yellow FIND tile.

The second part of this review will revolve around embedding quotes within your essay which follows MLA school of citation.

In English classes past you may have cited novels or short stories or poems parenthetically using MLA, which involves the author and page number from the text.

For Mr. MacDonald’s assignment many of your sources will be online so that changes things a little bit.

To embed quotes, there are a few simple guidelines to remember:

  1. No lonely quotes!
  2. Run-In and/or Run-Out
  3. Peppering a quote
  4. DOT.DOT.DOT
  5. COPY COPY (AUTHOR PAGE) PERIOD.

Finally, when in doubt, OWL Purdue is a great resource for all of your citation needs.

Remember that you will need to include a Works Cited page using  MLA school of Citation. It is crucial to properly reference information that is not your own in order to give credit where it’s due and also to avoid PLAGIARISM. Providing your teacher with a URL for a website used unfortunately will not cut it anymore.

Welcome to the Library, Ms. McMulkin’s ENG3U class!

You’re here today to search ebook options through the TDSB.

You have several options through TDSB’s Virtual Library as well as through the Toronto Public Library.

You can access the Library Catalogue through the Virtual library to search for ebooks which will link to the databases or skip this step and go directly to the databases: TeenBookcloud or Destiny Discover/FollettShelf.

Destiny Discover is password protected so it will ask you to log in. The login is: student# (user ID) student # (password).

For TeenBookCloud the login is: tdsb (user ID) and reads (password) accessed ONLY after logging into AW and accessing through the Virtual Library.

If you already have a Toronto Public Library library card, then you already know that you can borrow books through curbside pickup at your closest branch or borrow ebooks to read online using their Overdrive platform or Libby app.

If you don’t have a library card for the Public Library, it’s easy to get one online if you live in Toronto by registering for a Digital Access Card.

The Virtual Library will be a good starting point, looking at online news sources as well as others.

Remember that when you are researching from home, the databases will be password protected. Use a learnmark or ask Mrs. Vilicic if you’ve forgotten the user ID & password.

Resources for the Debate

The International Debate Education Association (IDEA) has a great resource designed for students who are performing in a debate. Make sure you use their Debatepedia, which are quite useful.

The Canadian Student Debating Federation has a great resource designed for students who are performing in a debate. Make sure you use their Research Aides, which are quite useful.

Here are some other very useful resources you can pick up at the Laurier Virtual Library.

Resources included are the Virtual Library Catalogue, the Canadian Points of View, Global Issues in Context and the Advanced Placement Source.

Curated Resources for Classes in the Library Today

Welcome to the Library!

Period Two- ENG4U

Ms. Shaw’s Grade 12 University Prep English class is coming in for a primer on MLA citation.

MLA is the style of choice for students studying in the Arts. You’ll find that it is used across all English classes here at Laurier (and most English Lit. courses in University too)

While you’ve probably seen MLA before, remember that is has undergone changes over the years. An easy primer on how to cite in MLA at Laurier can be found HERE.

In session, we will go over how to cite sections of an anthology, like the essays you’re currently deconstructing. We’ll also touch on citation generators and discuss why they’re a poor choice at this stage in your academic careers.

 

Remember to look to OWL @ Purdue for other questions that arise about citation. It’s where Mr. Kosowan or Ms. Vilicic go when we’re looking for information about citation.

 

Period Three- ENG1P

Students from Ms. Shaw’s Grade 9 English class will be introduced to the Library through an Orientation session. How books are signed out, where the different sections of are library are and other information will be covered before the class gets a book talk. Students will then get to sign out a book for their in-class reading time.

 

Period Four- ENG3U

Period 2 – ENG3U1-13

The Canadian Student Debating Federation has a great resource designed for students who are performing in a debate. If only we could find some students who were going to be in a debate…. Make sure you use their Research Aides, which are quite useful.

Ms. Gaudette’s  Canadian History class will be coming to work on their “ABCs of the Defining Moments of the 20th Century” assignment. (Wow; that was a mouthful) The Laurier Librarians have created a list of 20th/21st Century Canadian History resources. This list of print sources covers important primary source documents that will help aid your research. We’ve labelled it as “CHC2D – Canadian History Primary Sources” It can be found HERE.

You’ll also find a great deal of material online. If we may be so bold, here’s a collection of easy-to-find links that should help.

OISE is where University students learn how to be teachers. They have amassed a collection of digital resources that help promote the use of Primary Sources in Canadian History. You should check it out.

The Canadian Letters & Images Project archives the Canadian war experience from those who were there. You can search for real primary source documents by era, theme and location. You can find letters, photos or pretty much anything else you could use in terms of primary sources in Canada. Definitely a great resource.

Thompson Rivers University has another great collection of Primary source documents. With a West Coast bias, you’ll find some different resources than us elitist Ontarians.

And hey, while we’re travelling across Canada; let’s stop at Brandon University. The good Manitoban researchers have compiled a very useful list of primary sources.

The Library Catalogue has great resources here too. You should check it out remember to use the login info from your learnmarks. Some of these topics are covered by streaming video and ebooks in addition to our traditional print collection. That catalogue is certainly an invaluable resource for you.
