Welcome to the Library!

Period Two – ENG2D7 

Mr. Welsh’s Grade 10 Pre-IB English class will be coming to the Library to continue their research for their debate.

The following links provide students with access on and off site.

We’ll go over each of these sources and discuss how they help you best use a Research Tool Kit.

Mr. Philippou’s Grade 10 Pre-IB History class is coming to work on their 1920s assignment.

The Library’s Catalogue also will allow you on-site and remote access to our Print, Electronic and Streaming Video Collection.


Citation

You will be using the 17th updated version of the Chicago Manual of Style.

Yes, there is now a 17th Edition. Which means the old PDF or printout you’ve used in the past is now obsolete. You are welcome to take it out of your binder and (safely and neatly) throw it into the Blue Bin. Shooting for 3 works, but I’d suggest an aggressive dunk.

The new file can be found right here at Chicago Citation at Laurier.

The basics are unchanged, but we feel that this new resource will provide you with a thorough overview of the expectations laid out by the 17th Edition of the Chicago Manual of Style.

Look at this slide show for basics on how/where/when to use the Footnotes.

Here is an example essay file called From the dawn of time where you see how footnotes work.

Welcome to the Library!

Period One- ENG3C
Ms. Muzzi’s ENG3C class is coming to the Library to select a novel for their Independent Study.

Selecting “the right” novel is the an incredibly important part of this process. If you pick a book that bores you, your assignment will definitely bore everyone else.

So, how do you pick a good book?

For the students present today, our Library Staff will spend time with you and discuss how to pick a great book, or where you can find different books in our Library.

If you were absent, you can try the following, or ask a Teacher Librarian for help.

Using the Catalogue
The Library’s Catalogue also will allow you on-site and remote access to our Print, Electronic and Streaming Video Collection.

Here’s some advice.

  1. Do you have a favourite author? If so, pick a book they’ve written which you have not read to avoid reruns.
  2. Do you have a favourite movie? Or maybe a favourite video game? Knowing that genre might give us more to work with.
  3. You can try reading the back of a book, but keep in mind that those are written by people trying to get you to buy the book. They’re going to make that book seem as exciting as they can, right?
  4. You can use Goodreads, which has general synopsis and a lists of great reads, defined by genre.
  5. Ms. Muzzi has asked that your book be age appropriate and at least 200 pages long. Keep that in mind while searching.

Welcome to the Library!

Period 1 – ESLD/E

Ms. Ahmed’s ESLD/E class is coming in for a lesson on MLA citation.

MLA is the style of choice for students studying in the Arts. You’ll find that it is used across all English classes here at Laurier (and most English Lit. courses in University too)

While you’ve probably seen MLA before, remember that is has undergone changes over the years. An easy primer on how to cite in MLA at Laurier can be found HERE.

In session, we will go over how to cite sections a novel and a textbook. We’ll also touch on citation generators and discuss why they’re a poor choice at this stage in your academic careers.

You will also complete the following assignment for the end of the period. Please ensure that you include your name and Teacher’s name on the document before printing today. The assignment can be downloaded here at MLA Assignment – ESL.

Ms. Gaudette’s Grade 12 History class is working in the Library on their Essay. A PDF of the assignment can be found here.

JSTOR is an excellent resource for the Humanities. Whilst logged into the TDSB network, there are no ID/PW issues. When using the database remotely, remember that you are provided access to JSTOR through your Toronto Public Library card. Please check the TPL’s website for information.

Fordham University has created an Internet Sourcebook that provides primary source documents different civilizations and eras across History.

The Library’s Catalogue also will allow you on-site and remote access to our Print, Electronic and Streaming Video Collection.

Ms. Sandoval-Castro’s Grade 12 Canadian & World Issues class is working in the Library on their Essay. The specifics of what is expected can be found HERE.

From what we understand, students are writing an essay about a Global Issue.

The Library’s Databases

The Advanced Placement Source would be a great resource for this assignment. It provides access to academic journals and sources for which you would otherwise have to pay.

Also, Canadian Points of View and Global Viewpoints, which can be found at the same link above, provide exactly what their titles claim. They would be incredibly useful.

The Library Catalogue

The Catalogue will also will allow you on-site and remote access to our Print, Electronic and Streaming Video Collection. You can also access the CBC archives through this portal, which has a great deal of resources.

The Canadian Student Debating Federation has a great resource designed for students who are performing in a debate. If only we could find some students who were going to be in a debate…. Make sure you use their Research Aides, which are quite useful.

Welcome to the Library!

Period 1 & 4 – HSP3U7

Ms. Parsekhian and Ms. Belevski’s respective Grade 11 Psychology classes will be in the Library working on their Experiment Review Assignment, a PDF of that assignment is in the preceding link.

 

To access them, use our Catalogue; found on the Virtual Library. The Catalogue also provides you access to streaming video and other electronic resources. When off site,  you’ll need to log in with your TDSB information.

Ms. Shaw’s Grade 12 University Prep English class is coming in for a primer on MLA citation.

MLA is the style of choice for students studying in the Arts. You’ll find that it is used across all English classes here at Laurier (and most English Lit. courses in University too)

While you’ve probably seen MLA before, remember that is has undergone changes over the years. An easy primer on how to cite in MLA at Laurier can be found HERE.

In session, we will go over how to cite sections of an anthology, like the essays you’re currently deconstructing. We’ll also touch on citation generators and discuss why they’re a poor choice at this stage in your academic careers.

 

Remember to look to OWL @ Purdue for other questions that arise about citation. It’s where Mr. Kosowan or Ms. Vilicic go when we’re looking for information about citation.

 

Period Three- ENG1P

Students from Ms. Shaw’s Grade 9 English class will be introduced to the Library through an Orientation session. How books are signed out, where the different sections of are library are and other information will be covered before the class gets a book talk. Students will then get to sign out a book for their in-class reading time.

 

Period Four- ENG3U
