Curated Resources for Classes in the Library Today

Welcome to the Library!

Today, we welcome Grade 9 math classes, who are coming to the Library to be introduced to Mathify.

 

Have you ever asked your Math Teacher a question and forgot what they said later on? 
Have you ever wanted help with your math homework on a Thursday evening after dinner?
Have you ever wanted to use fun videos, simulations, games or tutorials to further your understanding of mathematical concepts?

Of course you have!

Offered by TVO’s Independent Learning Centre and the Ontario Ministry of Education, Mathify is free to all students in Ontario and is a great resource.

You can access a live tutor in the evenings as well as a large collection of digital resources to support your math education.

A lucky volunteer will be plucked from our studio audience today to show everyone how to register for Homework Help. If you registered in a previous year, you will simply have to activate your account.

There are two important links for you to use.

The first one is the OEN Lookup, this link will allow you to find your Ontario Education Number, which is required for Mathify Registration.

The second link is for Mathify itself. Click on Free Registration, and you’re off to the races.

Ms. Magson’s Challenge & Change class will be coming in to work on their Culminating Evaluation.

Obviously with the different research topics, students will need to look at different platforms for their research.

Search Strings

Refining your search terms will be the most important part of your research. Keep in mind that your currently somewhat vague research question has many different research avenues. Synonyms and the use of limiters for research engines might not be something you’re very familiar with… but it’s time you started. We’ll go over that as a group for a few minutes on Friday.

For example, if you’re researching Glorification of Mental Illness on Social Media…. I’d consider using some of the following terms…. why might some of these elicit different results?

The Library has a collection of books that cover different decades in Canadian and North American history.  These books can be found in the 971 section under the Dewey Decimal System. Books with more American focused information can be found in 973.

The Canadian Encyclopedia – This thorough collection of resources covers most Canadian options, but also looks at the local impact of several globally renowned individuals. It also provides links and a bibliography for easy access.

If you want to find some statistics to back up some of your claims, STATS Canada would be a great place to find data from the decades.

In terms of popular culture and photos/videos/song; CBC Curio would be a great source as well.

The Canadian Historical Association has a collection of useful resources to support today’s Canadian History student.

Canada: A Country by Consent was created by Canadian Historians who were wanted Canadian-Content created by Canadian writers. It has articles about the major events of Canadian history.

The CBC archives provides you with access to thousands of audio clips and video clips that are easy to integrate into your presentation.

The International Debate Education Association (IDEA) has a great resource designed for students who are performing in a debate. If only we could find some students who were going to be in a debate…. Make sure you use their Debatepedia, which are quite useful.

In terms of research, we might suggest you use the following sites:

  • Blackpast.org is a robust series of resources that support the studies of African History in North America, Europe and Globally as well.  The google custom search feature at the top of the page makes navigating the website quite easy.
  • African History Month provides accessible articles about important people and events in African American history.
  • The Canadian Encyclopedia houses articles on many of the names found on your assignment, and also provides related articles and links too.
  • There are incredibly useful and age-appropriate databases found on the Virtual Library site. (I.e., they’re not too basic and they’re not University Graduate level hard) I’d suggest you look at Canadian Points of View, Global Issues in Context and the Advanced Placement Source.

You’re expected to complete a Reference list using APA format. We’ve created a Laurier-friendly primer on citing with APA, so please use this file found at APA Citation PDF.

Instead of just going to The Google, you’d all be well-served to consult the following databases.

Resources

Our Library Catalogue has excellent print, digital and streaming video resources. In terms of nutrition and physical training; you can find some good print resources that will support your work.

The series of databases has been developed by the World Health Organization (WHO) provides an extensive view of nutrition. Obviously, theirs is a more global perspective on nutrition, but provides some excellent details.

Health Canada has great resources that are well suited to your assignment in terms of food and nutrition.

To accurately track and tabulate nutritional information, you could use a service such as MyFitnessPal.

Canadians have been ignoring Canada’s Food Guide for years. Time to break the cycle. Using it to help support your dietary advice is just common sense.

The Dietitians of Canada provides articles and primers that are issue-based.
